In order to focus attention on success for each student, MACHS maintains small classes and the school is divided into two administrative units--- a middle school of grades 5-8 and a high school of grades 9-12. All new students begin with a baseline assessment so that learning plans can focus on assuring that each student meets the school’s rigorous academic standards.
In light of research on how students learn best, the MACHS school day begins at 9:00 and ends 3:45 from Monday through Friday during the regular school year. Each year, special maritime learning experiences are available to students during the summer months of July and August. This extension of the regular school calendar allows students the opportunity to participate in special aquatic activities, collegiate learning opportunities, and internships with a variety of industries, and community organizations.
MACHS uses advanced computing technology in all aspects of its educational program in order to develop students’ skills in using technology in the workplace, using computers for learning, using computers for research, using maritime specific technologies for navigation, communication, and developing and marketing their ideas. The School’s ultimate goal is to have all students possess a laptop computer so that they are able to learn remotely without restriction to time and place.
